I was introduced to the benefits of healthy living and mindful eating at a very young age. And I’m so glad that being healthy isn’t a goal for me, it is a way of life!
The choice of the right kind of food is essential for a healthy body, mind, and soul. These days dry fruits are regaining the lost connection of being an important part of everyday consumption and I couldn’t be happier. Dried fruits are becoming more and more popular in cooking. They add a lot of richness to the food without adding fat. Hence it can be introduced guiltlessly in our diet. The supermarkets these days are flooded with a variety of dry fruits. One such dry fruit which is gaining popularity in terms of consumption because of its high nutritional benefits is American Pistachio.
American Pistachios are a type of tree nut with numerous health benefits. They are an excellent source of protein, antioxidants, and fibre. On 27th May 2020, American Pistachio Growers (APG) organised a virtual knowledge session with Dr. Mike Roussell- a globally renowned Nutrition Consultant, Author and Advisor, based in USA to create awareness about the importance of protein intake for both children as well as adults and informing people about Pistachios being declared as a ‘complete protein.’
Pistachio as a complete protein indicates they join the ranks of small number of plant proteins such as quinoa, chickpeas and soybeans. Consumption of these plant proteins has considerably increased in the last few years among vegetarians and consumers who wish to move away from animal proteins. Pistachios fall under this category of plant proteins as they have highly beneficial properties.
American Pistachios contain the nine essential amino acids our body requires for its healthy functioning. They are complete and do not require addition of complementary proteins to suffice the growing needs of the body. The American pistachios are a one stop shop as a source of plant-based protein. They are portable, need no cooking and can be enjoyed anytime as a snack.
Pistachios are one of the world’s oldest nuts mentioned in the Old Testament of The Bible, which indicates the rich history as a prized food source (American Pistachios, 2014). Like, all nuts pistachios are rich in beneficial nutrients. However, pistachios have some unique properties that set them apart. They are a rich protein source and have a healthy ratio of beneficial fatty acids. Pistachios contain beneficial antioxidants and are a source of the mineral phosphorus- an element essential for our proper physiological functioning. Pistachios are a rich source of Vitamin B6 that has myriad health benefits. These are rich in fibre and stimulate a healthy digestive system. They are extremely helpful in reducing cholesterol levels and aid in the healthy functioning of the heart. With their low glycaemic index, pistachios help to balance sugar levels. The benefits of pistachios are innumerable.
The aim of the American Pistachios Growers is simply to spread the awareness about the beneficial properties of this nut. They objective is to educate Indian consumers about the power of pistachios. Survey shows that children in India do not consume pistachios. The fact that these nuts are a ‘complete’ protein means they are extremely essential for young bodies and minds to consume and the APG’s objective is to spread this awareness through their virtual learning series on the #PowerofPistachios.
I’ve made a conscious decision of including a handful of Pistachios in my family’s daily diet, Are you taking necessary steps for your families wellbeing?
